The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) worked with a team of carbon experts to develop the Darkwoods Forest Carbon Project.

The developers

NCC worked closely with 3GreenTree Ecosystem Services and ERA Ecosystem Restoration Associates to develop a unique Improved Forest Management methodology for quantifying the amount of carbon stored in temperate and boreal forests where timber harvesting is planned.

Dr. Robert Falls of ERA:

“Darkwoods represents a major step forward for British Columbia and Canada in recognizing the important role our forests play in climate mitigation, while demonstrating that forests have multiple economic values, of which carbon is one. I’d like to recognize NCC and 3GT for showing leadership in developing this project, and congratulate the Pacific Carbon Trust and Forest Carbon Group for supporting it in the marketplace. ERA is proud to have participated in making the Darkwoods Forest Carbon Project a reality and we look forward to helping further establish BC and Canada as a leader within the green economy.”

3GreenTree Ecosystem Services is a Vancouver-based full service forest ecosystem asset development, acquisition and management company.

ERA Ecosystem Restoration Associates is a Vancouver-based pioneer in carbon projects. In addition to contributing to the development of the project, ERA also purchased 250,000 credits from Darkwoods, which flowed into to the European voluntary market through their German partners, the Forest Carbon Group AG.

The auditors

Carbon projects must be certified to ensure that the carbon credits are in fact real and measurable. The Darkwoods Forest Carbon project was audited and approved by a number of independent organizations.

Rainforest Alliance and Det Norske Veritas each approved the methodology that was used to calculate the amount of carbon available on Darkwoods. These auditors certified that the Darkwoods Forest Carbon project meets the internationally recognized Verified Carbon Standard.

Scientific Certification Systems verified the project meets the highest international standards for accountability, meaning the Darkwoods Carbon Project produces and maintains tangible environmental benefits over the life of the project.
