Plastic Pollution in Africa: A Growing Environmental and Health Emergency

Plastics have become an indispensable part of modern society due to their versatility, durability, and low cost. However, the rapid growth in plastic production, combined with inadequate waste management systems, has resulted in widespread environmental pollution with serious ecological, social, and human health implications. This article examines the scale of global and Kenyan plastic pollution, the proliferation of macro-, micro-, and nanoplastics across life-supporting systems, and the disproportionate burden borne by local communities. Drawing on recent global and national data, the article highlights why plastic pollution persists despite growing awareness and policy efforts. It further positions grassroots, evidence-based action—such as that undertaken by the Africa Climate and Environment Foundation (ACEF), as critical to bridging the gap between community realities, research, and effective policy responses.
