Africa’s Urban Growth Crisis: How Cities Can Rebuild Biodiversity Before It’s Too Late

Africa is urbanizing rapidly, raising urgent questions about how cities can grow without undermining the ecosystems that sustain life. The 2nd Africa Urban Forum in Nairobi highlighted the deep links between urban development, nature, and community well-being. Discussions reinforced that rivers, wetlands, forests, and oceans are not separate from cities but essential to their resilience and survival. The forum concluded with the adoption of the Nairobi Declaration, reaffirming a shared commitment to inclusive and sustainable urban transformation across Africa.

Mangrove Restoration in Benin: How Ganvié’s Floating Communities Are Fighting Sea-Level Rise

Promoting Safer Livelihoods in Fishing and Aquaculture

Fishing remains one of the most dangerous livelihoods for many coastal communities across the Western Indian Ocean, particularly within small-scale fisheries where access to safety equipment and resources is limited. During the Safe Livelihoods in Fishing and Aquaculture Workshop organized by Ocean Centres Kenya and hosted by Global Compact Network Kenya in Mombasa, stakeholders highlighted the urgent need to strengthen occupational safety awareness, improve access to protective equipment, and support community-centered solutions that protect fisherfolk while sustaining coastal livelihoods.

Delivering the Kampala Vision: A New Chapter for Cameroon’s Agrifood Systems

This article highlights the significance of the CAADP Kampala Declaration Workshop held in Yaoundé, Cameroon, and why it matters for the country’s future food systems and climate resilience. It explains how the Kampala Declaration and the CAADP Strategy 2026–2035 aim to move Africa from policy commitments to real implementation that strengthens agriculture, supports farmers, and builds resilient agrifood systems. The article also reflects on the role of the Africa Climate and Environment Foundation (ACEF) in the process, particularly its mandate to represent the youth constituency in Cameroon. It emphasizes that young people, civil society, and community actors must be actively involved in shaping and implementing agricultural and climate policies. Ultimately, the piece calls for implementation that communities can truly feel, through better opportunities, stronger rural livelihoods, and more resilient food systems.

Plastic Pollution in Africa: A Growing Environmental and Health Emergency

Plastics have become an indispensable part of modern society due to their versatility, durability, and low cost. However, the rapid growth in plastic production, combined with inadequate waste management systems, has resulted in widespread environmental pollution with serious ecological, social, and human health implications. This article examines the scale of global and Kenyan plastic pollution, the proliferation of macro-, micro-, and nanoplastics across life-supporting systems, and the disproportionate burden borne by local communities. Drawing on recent global and national data, the article highlights why plastic pollution persists despite growing awareness and policy efforts. It further positions grassroots, evidence-based action—such as that undertaken by the Africa Climate and Environment Foundation (ACEF), as critical to bridging the gap between community realities, research, and effective policy responses.
